Fitchburg TT Simulation

So last night, as I was heading out towards the EBCC TT course in Pleasant Valley to do a little interval work, I realized that same area is perfect Fitchburg TT practice territory. Starting on the east side of the river (the opposite side of the EBCC TT), you can head north, ride the rollers/flats (all slightly uphill) for about 5 miles, continue straight on Rt. 20 and start up the long climb, go up the first couple steep pitches and there you are. Pretty close to the Fitchburg course. I will probably do a few test runs out there during the next month. If anyone is interested in checking this out, let me know. I just mapped it quick...check it out.

You can make your own map online with the web site; it's free. Just click the link to my make and then "Clear Points and Start Over" or just go to the web site and start your own from scratch. It saves it when you are done and all you have to do is bookmark it. There are a lot of other sites out there that do the same thing, but this one's pretty user-friendly.

Just a quick comment on the Fitchburg TT course. As part of a 3.5 hr ride through central MA yesterday, I hit the course again just ot see how badly I could suffer on it. The thing that struck me is that the final climb is bad, but it isn't the killer on this course. There is a 1/2 mi sustained climb running into some rollers immediately after turning right onto RT 140 from RT 31. The climb is exacerbated because the sharp turn off of RT 31 prevents carrying as much momentum as possible into the hill. I was suffering up this hill at or under 14 MPH and the subsequent rollers prevented a quick recovery after cresting. In fact, once I got to the flats going by the reservoir and into the final climb, I could not sustain a speed I figure I should be able to on that terrain. So, factor that into a simulation. Ca. halfway through the tt (actually right at about 3.5 mi) figure you've got a good sustained climb that could sap your legs (at the very least, it sapped mine).

Yes, I agree. Back on the old, longer FSR TT course that same uphill drag was a in it, and a killer. That's why I like my practice TT route. It's not exactly the same, but you'll notice it drags up steadily, esp. to the ending climb on Rt. 20.
